Seabed classification is used by Fisheries Management, Habitat Assessment, Environmental Monitoring, Coastal Zone Management, Mine Countermeasures and Anti-Submarine Warfare, Dredging and subsea mining. The remote classification of the sea bottom requires an acoustic data acquisition system combined with a set of algorithms that analyse the data, determine the seabed type, and relate the results of the acoustic classification to the physical properties of the sediments. The Quester Tangent Corp. QTC VIEW seabed classification technique uses the shape of a returning echo to characterise the seabed. The shape of the returning waveform is related to the nature of the target and depending on the type of echo return will determine the type of bottom. The QTC IMPACT is an integrated software package and provides sophisticated post-processing of echo sounder data. Enhanced visualisation techniques enable detailed data quality control. QTC IMPACT does not require prior calibration to classify seabed types and with advanced statistical techniques allows the user to confidently classify all types of seabed quickly and efficiently.
