The Kongsberg Simrad Hydro-acoustic Positioning Reference system (portable or vessel installation) is the choice of underwater contractors for ROV positioning, underwater navigation, towed body tracking and positioning of subsea structures in the oil and gas industry.

The HPR systems are based on short, long and super short baseline principles or a combination of all. The SSBL principal is the most popular and convenient system to use with the installation of only one transducer necessary to establish a three dimensional position of the transponder. The SSBL system measures the horizontal and vertical angles together with the range to the transponder. This data is displayed on the surface monitor for the operator to accurately assess the position of the equipment.
